How to Make an Inexpensive Art Portfolio

Art Portfolios are a great way to store and transport artwork, but they can be expensive.

Here's a suggestion to create your own portfolio for about $1.30.

You will need:

1 poster board (22" x 28" is recommended)

28 inches of cotton or vinyl 1" webbing (available from any fabric or craft store)

4 brads

a ruler

duct tape (now available in multiple colors from art and craft stores)

scissors

an x-acto knife

old newspaper to protect the work surface

1. Fold the poster board in half to create a 22"x 14" pocket.

2. On the top edge, measure and mark a line at 8", 9", 13" and 14". Measure 2" down from each mark and create a horizontal line from the 8 to the 9 and from the 13 to the 14. Repeat this on the other side as well.

3. Cut a slit in each of the 4 horizontal lines created in step 2. Make sure to place the newspaper under the poster board to protect your work surface.

3. Cut the webbing into two 14" pieces. Cut a small vertical opening in each end of both pieces large enough to insert a brad.

4. Push one end of a piece of webbing from the outside into the 1"opening. Make a tiny incision in the poster board about 1" below the opening. Place the brad into the opening, push it through the cut in the webbing and secure on the inside of the portfolio. Repeat this for the other end of the webbing on the same side to create a handle. Make sure the webbing is not twisted. Repeat this to create the 2nd handle.

5. Tape down the end of the webbing on the inside of the portfolio to prevent the ends from unraveling.

6. Tape the front and back sides of the poster board together on both ends.

We are working on a batik project. Traditional batik uses hot wax as a resist and then the fabric is colored with dyes. We are using a mixture of toothpaste and lotion for our resist and we're painting our fabric with tempera paints.

The artist Amadeo Modigliani has a distinct style of portraiture. He likes to give his subjects elongated necks and empty eyes. The result is a sort of eerie elegance. We tried our hand at his style. We realized just how important the eyes can be in a work of art.

We read the book Snowballs. In the book, the narrator creates a snowman, a snow girl, a snow boy, a snow dog, etc. with everyday household items. We created ours by tracing and cutting out circles of white paper. We added buttons, bead, foam shapes and craft sticks for the details on our snow creations.

We created Very Hungry Caterpillars by cutting and gluing some papers we painted. We added some details with crayons too. Learn more about Eric Carle and his books here.

We have been learning about Native American forms of art, including weaving, sand painting and pottery. We wove pieces of yarn into burlap. Learn more about weaving here.

We learned about the artist and author Faith Ringgold. After reading Tar Beach as a class, we created paintings of special places. In the book, the main character flies over some special places that we would like to own. Some of us included places we would like to fly over to make them ours.

We created self-portraits of ourselves with pets or animals we like.

Portraits

Paper Weaving with Warm and Cool Colors

Penguins are one of our favorite winter animals and we wanted to create some art about them. First we created light, cool colors of paint by mixing white paint into the purple and blue. We also added some pearl and glitter mediums. After our paint was dry, we cut out penguin bodies, head, flippers, eyes, beak and feet from construction paper and glued them to our backgrounds.

City Painting

We learned about the artist Jasper Johns. He likes to create art using images that are familiar to us from everyday life, such as the American flag. He wants to help us look more closely at these images and think about them in a new way. We decided to alter and rearrange the American flag in our paintings.

We learned about the artist Jackson Pollock who pours, drips and splatters paints. We created these with watercolor paints. We used straws to help push the paint around on our papers.

Kandinsky Sqaures:

Wassily Kandinksy is a famous Russian artist that lived in the late 1880's. For Kandinsky, art and music were always connected. He claimed that he would see colors when he heard music. He did a lot of art experiments with color and how they interact and make us feel. We did a similar experiment. We had 12 squares to fill on our papers with repeating concentric shapes. Three of the squares had to have warm, cool or neutral colors, complementary colors and analogous colors. They other squares could have any color combinations we invented and we came up with a name for each of these combinations.

Analogous Colors

Analogous colors are any three colors which are side by side on a 12 part color wheel, such as yellow-green, yellow, and yellow-orange.

Complementary Colors

Complementary colors are any two colors which are directly opposite each other, such as red and green and red-purple and yellow-green. Complementary colors look brighter when placed next to each other.

PAPER WEAVING:

We painted two papers with watercolors. Then we cut vertical strips on one paper and horizontal strips on the other. Then we wove the horizontal strips over and under the vertical strips.

We learned about the artist Deborah Butterfield. She creates sculptures of horses made from sticks, mud, scrap metal etc. We created drawings of horses that we "built" by tracing different shapes. We mixed our colors in every area where the shapes overlapped.

Aboriginal Art:

We were inspired by the indigenous peoples of Australia called the Aborigines. They are well known for their paintings on bark. Their culture has been creating them for thousands of years. Many of their paintings tell as religious story about nature and are called Dreamings.

They often make objects or animals appear like an x-ray or see-through in their art. Tey also include lots of dots in their artwork instead of solid color. Some of their paintings are completely made up of dots!

To make this project we glued a small piece of white paper to a large piece of brown construction paper. Then we drew a picture in the Aboriginal style on the white paper and outlined it in crayon. We painted over the crayon with black or brown watercolors. Finally we painted dots around the border with dowels.

Egyptian Portraits:

We learned that the Egyptians had a special way to draw or paint people. They used the profile of the person's face, but used a front view of the shoulders and eye. They felt by combining different views in their art they could include the most important information about the person. We used our classmates as visual references when creating our portraits. We used darker skin colors for the men and lighter colors for the women, just like the Egyptians did. We added some adornments such as headdresses and jewelry and eye make-up. The Egyptians loved to decorate themselves with these things. It seems like they treated their bodies as works of art.

Tessellations:

We created tessellations using special stencils. Tessellations are repeating shapes that cover a surface with no gaps or overlaps.

Favorite Color Paintings:

After reading the book A Blue So Blue, we talked about some our favorite colors or colors that are special to us. Then we created paintings that included these colors. This student choose to include a happy pink pig in a mud puddle because pink was her favorite color.

Architectural drawings: We designed some really unique buildings after reading Iggy Peck, Architect by Andrea Beaty.

After reading Leaf Man by Lois Elhert, were were inspired to create our own leaf people.

We have been practicing identifying vertical, horizontal and diagonal lines in art and in life. We created works of art that began from either a vertical or horizontal line. Can you tell which lines these artists started with?

We learned about Perspective, a rule that artists have figured out about the ways our eyes see the world. Things that are close to us look big, and things that are far away look small. We used our knowledge of perspective to create underwater scenes. We drew them in crayon and then painted over them with watercolors. Can you tell which objects are meant to be close to the viewer? Which ones are far away in the distance? How can you tell?

We learned about Pablo Picasso. He used different styles in his art, but one of his favorites was a style he invented called Cubism. In cubism, the artist breaks up the picture into small pieces, like cubes and rearranges them. We created cubist portraits by rearranging the parts of the face and using fun, bright colors.

Color Scheme Paintings with Traced Objects

Sixth graders are now learning about Greek art. They will be creating mosaics using magazine pieces. Their mosaics will depict heros they have invented, while inspired by traditional Greek heros, such as Hercules.

We learned to do a new kind of drawing called Blind Contour Line Drawing. In order to do it, one must draw with one continuous line (never pick up his/her pencil) and look at the thing/person he/she is drawing, not at the paper. It is very difficult at first, but this process is proven to improve one's drawing ability. We created portraits of our classmates and then colored each shape with oil pastels and then painted over them with watercolors to create more subdued, layered colors.
